Loch Ness and Glencoe
We left Inverness and motored to Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness. We saw a short film about the history of the castle. In 1690 the soldiers of William of Orange blew up the castle’s gatehouse to prevent the Jacobites from reoccupying the castle. Time and the elements have added further destruction. After walking around the ruins and climbing many steps we stopped for lunch in Fort Augustus. The town is popular with tourists because of its scenic canals and locks. Glencoe Visitors Center was the day’s last stop. In 1692 the MacDonald Clan entertained the Campbell Clan for 12 days. The party ended on a sad note when the Campbells massacred the MacDonald’s on day 13! Hence the area is known as the “Weeping Valley”.
